These quilts were made between 2008 - 2013 when I was very ill with interstitial cystitis (IC) and pudendal neuralgia (PNE). The first quilt, "IC Hurts," was published in the ICA Update, a monthly magazine of the Interstitial Cystitis Association. It was auctioned and purchased by the ICA and now hangs in their corporate office in McLean, VA.
The second quilt, "The Doctor's Office," was made to communicate the frustration and desperation caused by an illness for which there is no cure -- an illness that doctors find difficult to diagnose and impossible to treat.
I am glad to be able to express these feelings in art, not only for myself, but for others who suffer with this invisible illness. In 2011 one of my closest friends died as the result of this disease. As her husband describes it, "she just couldn't take the pain anymore." That event was a catalyst for me. I decided I would no longer stay private about this illness, but share it openingly whenever I could. I have a medical blog at www.icandpne.wordpress.com. For more, www.icandpne.wordpress.com.
